SIGNIFICANCE & HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The center, stone portion of the house appears to be an early house, later subject to extensive additions and alterations in a vernacular second Empire Style. However, no building appears on the site in the l868 Atlas of Morris County. By 1887, the house, along with another dwelling (survey #1430-71) are noted on a map as the property of H. G. Torrey. Herbert Torrey was a geologist and metallurgist, who served for a time as a U. S. Assayer. He helped discover and establish a trap rock quarry in West Millington. Torrey also established a metal factory in Stirling in the 1890's.

COMMENTS:

An unusual combination of architectural styles, enhanced by its hilltop setting. Maintenance, particularly of fragile, decorative details is especially critical, or they will be lost, and much of the building's character with them.
