ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Large flat-roofed frame
addition a south east side of building. Entry at
base of projecting tower with paired doors and
second Empire Style enframement, multiple porches
and porte-cochere. Bracketed eaves and jigsawn
window hoods. Multiple additions with various
Victorian-era decorations.
Hilltop site with wooded vistas in all directions. Frame carriage house with shiplap siding in poor condition,converted to two-car garage.
SIGNIFICANCE & HISTORICAL INFORMATION The center, stone portion of the house appears to be an early house,later subject to extensive additions and alterations in a vernacular second Empire Style. However, no building appears on the site in the l868 Atlas of Morris County. By 1887, the house, along with another dwelling (survey #1430-71) are noted on a map as the property of H. G. Torrey. Herbert Torrey was a geologist and metallurgist, who served for a time as a U. S. Assayer. He helped discover and establish a trap rock quarry in West Millington. Torrey also established a metal factory in Stirling in the 1890's.

architectural styles, enhanced by its hilltop
setting. Maintenance, particularly of fragile,
decorative details is especially critical, or they
will be lost, and much of the building's character
