DESCRIPTION

A small, rural hamlet, centered on Long Hill Road between Old Mill Road and the Crescent, and paralleling the tracks of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad. Most of the scattered village buildings date from the early 20th century; all are vernacular, utilitarian structures. The commercial block containing the post office (built 1921) is a simplified version of an English Tudor period revival building, highlighted by decorative half-timbers in the gables. Other structures in the Village include a firehouse, a gas station, and the railroad station (see survey #48). Residences are scattered beyond the village core, and not within this district.

The Millington area began to be settled in the 1730's, as people traveled up the Passaic River. It is believed that Millington was named for the mills established on the river in the 18th century, although there is no physical evidence remaining of the village from that early date. The railroad was put through in 1870-71; the present station built in 1901 replaces the original.

COMMENTS:

This area is a wealthy ex-urban haven, and the low-key buildings in their rural setting are highly valued for the "country" image they present.
