The cottage form of the house ad its small windows, as well as the siting near the Passaic River supports this. Joshua Davis was an 18th century settler of 150 acres in this part of Passaic Township/Long Hill Township. In 1787 he had title to the present house. The house appears in the 1868 Atlas of Morris County as the property of "S. White." The 1887 Atlas identifies this as the "J. King" residence.
