ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Federal house with later

on east side. Rear kitchen wing at right angles to
main house.
House sited extremely close to road. Small 20th century log outbuilding to rear of property. Modern frame two-car garage with board and batten siding built to imitate barn. SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT
SIGNIFICANCE & HISTORICAL INFORMATION An excellent example of regional vernacular Federal architecture. The block and wing form of the house is typical for the area. The proportions of the front door enframement are especially fine, indicating the work of a true "master" builder. The Carle family were early and prominent settlers of what is now Long Hill Township. Jacob Carle came from Long Island about 1732 after purchasing 500 acres north of the Passaic Rover. His grandson Daniel built this house. The earlier Carle homestead is no longer standing.
