DESCRIPTION / SIGNIFICANCE

A wooded hillside, initially developed as a residential area in the 1920's. This portion of Mountain Avenue contains a concentration of Craftsman-inspired and Period Revival domestic architecture, interspersed with eight modern builder's houses. The condition, integrity, and setting of the early 20th century houses make up Long Hill Township's best examples of these styles.

82 Mountain Avenue: (Gillette Nursery) Foursquare, excellent condition and integrity. Clapboard first floor, shingled second floor, hip roof, 1/1 sash. No photo possible due to large shrubs and decorative landscaping around house.

95 Mountain Avenue: Craftsman-influenced house; 1 1/2 stories, "L" plan; shingle siding, exterior cobblestone chimney. DEMOLISHED 2007

137 Mountain Avenue: Bungalow; owner claims this is the first house of the group to have been built. Clapboard and shingle siding; integral front porch, center entry, grouped 1/1 sash windows, shed roof dormer.

138 Mountain Avenue: Craftsman-inspired cottage. Extensively altered and added to.

167 Mountain Avenue: Colonial Revival style with Craftsman details. 2 1/2 story, three bay center entry, gable roof with end chimneys, multi-light upper sash and single light lower sash; stucco exterior; frame one-story wings to sides. Pedimented portico

187 Mountain Avenue: Colonial Revival style. Quite similar to #167 above.

182 Mountain Avenue: Craftsman-inspired cottage. Jerkin-headed roof, synthetic siding; three bay facade with center entry; multi-light upper sash and single light lower sash. Fair condition.

167 Mountain Avenue. One of two Colonial Revival style houses built in the otherwise entirely Bungalow-Craftsman streetscape.

137 Mountain Avenue. The first house built along this stretch of Mountain Avenue, it is a generously proportioned Bungalow.

DEMOLISHED FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION 2007
95 Mountain Avenue. The cobblestone chimney is a stylistic clue relating this otherwise simple house to the early 20th century Craftsman movement in architecture.
