SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT
Great view of distant hills. Original property subdivided; surrounding area full of many small houses ca. 1950's.
Mr. Cammeyer was a 19th century self-made man, who it is said, began his career selling shoelaces and ended by owning several shoe factories and stores. He had an estate created for himself in the eastern corner of the then Passaic Township which was quite a showplace at the turn-of-the century. After Cammeyer's death, the estate was subdivided by L. Preston Gates in the 1920's, becoming one of the first residential developments in the township. These two "summer cottages" are all that survive from the estate.
