The steep north face of Long Hill, just south of the village of Meyersville, was initially developed as a summer colony, and later became a middle-class residential area. The wooded hillside is crossed by narrow unpaved roads with idyllic names such as Ideal Street, Home Street, and Youngsters Lane. The district extends from Long Hill Road, to Hickory Tavern Road, to Kalson Road.
The Shingle Style and its vernacular derivatives influenced the design of the earliest houses in the area. Most notable of this type are 37 and 49 Ideal Street, and 686 Kalson Road.
Later development tended to smaller structures influenced by the Craftsman movement. Three tiny summer houses clustered at the corner of Long View Terrace and Land Street best illustrate typical buildings of the 1920's. Curiously, however, the Bungalow does not appear in this district.
Infill building from the 1940's to 1970's has completed development in the area. It is densely built, although the thickly wooded terrain and long vistas from most residences give a feeling of privacy and country living.
Development began on the ridge of Long Hill Road about 1900, with construction of large, shingled and rusticated houses. They had a commanding view of the Watchung Hills to the south. When the sites with views were gone, development proceeded down the south slope of Long Hill, with smaller and less pretentious houses generally occupying the lower elevations.
The entire area, centered on Long View Terrace, although used for year-round residences, retains a sense of an early 20th century summer colony, through the setting and architecture.

1986
Number 115 Longview Terrace. Although greatly modified, the
cobblestone chimney, small size and spectacular hillside
site mark this as an early 20th century summer cottage now
converted to year-round use.

1986

the cottages in the development.
